During World War I, propaganda was used very often in different countries in order to keep the morale of the countries people up, and to attempt to keep the morale of other countries down or to keep the other countries people, thinking that the country that they are fighting isn’t so different, or bad. There were some different types of propaganda, which were used as morale boosters in the war. Germany, Britain, and America were three of the many countries, which used propaganda to their advantage. Propaganda could be presented in many ways, but three ways in which propaganda was presented was through film, music, and artistic images. Propaganda was generally had a very strong impact on people in different countries.
During the war, film was quite a new form of entertainment, and some countries thought it would be good for their country if they were to put propaganda films up for people to see. Once people would see these films, an idea would grow in their heads, and they would begin to understand the message in the movie, or the hidden message. These films were used to get people to go against another country, or to try their best to help the country in any way possible. Some films that were used during the war were quite interesting, and one of the films that were used during the war was known as a Charlie Chaplin production named, Zepped. He also created another film known as, The Bond. The Bond was a film, which involved Charlie Chaplin beating up the iconic figure of Kaiser, the leader of Germany at the time. Some other countries such as Britain and Germany used films to create an idea amongst people. Britain made films known as Britain Prepared, and The Battle of Somme. The Battle of Somme was a very graphic film, which involved actual clips of real war footage, which involved people dying. It was a film, which definitely impacted many people. A German company that created films was named Ufa, and through the four years from 1914 to 1918, many companies rose up and became very popular by the end of the war. Germany’s film industry grew very rapidly through these years, and film ended up becoming a very large industry after the war as well. Germany also had some films made that were shown in the USA and the films were used to give Americans the idea that Germany wasn’t so bad after all.
Music was also a form of propaganda used during the war. Since music was heard by many people during the war. America had some popular songs that were used during the war, and it boosted the morale of its troops and the people who were at home. Over There was the name of this song, and it talked about a man getting his gun, which could signify fighting for your freedom and having the freedom to protect yourself with weapons. Another song by the Americans was called America I Love You. This song was also a morale booster as it gave Americans the will to fight and continue working for their countries victory in the war. Britain had a song which was called The British Bulldogs Watching At The Door, and this song is obviously used to give the British a feeling of safety and necessity to protect their nation in the war. They knew that if they were to send this song out, then the British would think of working, and every British person would try to do their part. For King And Country was another song, which was used by the British as a morale boost.
Propaganda was also expressed and presented through imagery, and artistic paintings and pictures. This was the most common form of propaganda during World War I and many different countries used this. Since it was also the most affordable form of propaganda, it was the easiest to find and look at during the time. Anyone in the country could see this form of propaganda, which was what made it such an effective form of propaganda. Americans used the images to try to make the enemy seem very terrible and horrifying. This tactic was used in able to make the people seem like they were in a totally different situation, when very many people didn’t realize that the citizens of the other countries were in the same problem, and they had very similar lifestyles. There were also forms of propaganda used by the Americans that showed a working class man and a soldier working side by side, which signified that someone who worked in a factory was just as important as the soldiers fighting the war on the front. This gave the American people a reason to work in factories, and it made people want to work for their people and the good of their country. Germans seemed to use imagery in propaganda in order to show the German soldier as a savior, and a protector above others. This was a very effective form of propaganda, since it was used in order to have young men enlist in the army. Many men didn’t know what they were getting into when they would enlist, and the propaganda gave a false glorifying view of a soldier. The British used imagery propaganda in order to give the British a reason to join the army. Their propaganda was similar to the Germans propaganda, because it was used in order to get people to enlist in the army and defend their nation. * So all in all propaganda in the form of images was pretty effective.
So overall, propaganda was definitely a very strong weapon, and it was a very dangerous weapon if it was put in the right hands. It convinced people to do things for their country and it convinced them to fight harder against their enemies. Film, music, and artistic images were some of the possible uses of propaganda. Images were the most viewed since almost anyone could see them on the street or in a newspaper, but movies and films were the most expensive during the day since people who had a pretty nice lifestyle and were comfortable economically usually viewed them. Songs were in the middle as performers could listen them to on the radio or. Propaganda was also once again used to make other countries feel smaller, or make their enemy seem like they aren’t so bad. In Germany’s case, some propaganda was shown to some American people, showing them that the Germans weren’t so different, which could inspire sympathy and could get the Americans to lighten up or join them, even though there was a very slim chance in that. So all in all once again, propaganda was a very effective weapon used for convincing, and it tended to work. Some countries may have also won the war because of propaganda.
